Alan Grainger ‘Acornman’ Oak Pin Bowl, 1960s

A rare early ‘Acornman’ solid oak circular pin bowl, likely made in the early days of the business when Alan’s father George was still heavily involved in the business and they traded as G. J. Grainger & Son. We’ve not seen another like it in our 20+ years of collecting or dealing in the Yorkshire craftsmen’s work.

Lathe turned initially and then hancrafted from a solid block of oak, it tapers slightly from the base to the top and features a chiselled triangular band around the middle section with their distinctive acorn carved in relief to the front.

Very Arts & Crafts in style which is a period and style of furniture design that George much admired. Indeed we are privileged to now own the book that was the source of many of his Arts and Crafts design ideas; Handmade Woodwork of the Twentieth Century by A. E. Bradshaw. Signed by George and annotated throughout, Alan presented it to David following a visit to see Alan and an impromtu tour around the now eerily and almost empty workshop buildings several years ago.

Excellent condition, just a small mark on the inside of the bowl from usage over the years. It presents with lovely rich deeper fumed and wax polished colour.

Size: 9.8 (dia) at the base, 9 (dia) at the top x 6.5(h)cm
