An excellent and unusual large Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson solid oak monks / bishops chair with leather hide seat. It is approximately 30% wider and deeper than the standard version. Constructed in typical traditional style with a curved back and shaped arms over three interwoven lattice panels, the central panel with a carved Maltese cross motif. Standing on four octagonally carved legs, one with trademark signature mouse carved in high relief, joined by cross stretchers. Original leather hide with upholstery pins around the edge.
Believed to be originally part of an ecclesiastical commission, possibly for the Hospitallers Order of the Brothers of St. John of God who established a Catholic house in Scorton, North Yorkshire in 1880 which has now developed into a hospital and nursing home, owned and operated by them.
Excellent condition, solid framework, no stains or repairs, just minor expected colour fading from usage on the central part of the leather seat. Original medium fumed oak framework, clear wax finished.
The image gallery includes an image of this chair next to a standard sized monks chair to demonstrate its much larger overall size.
Size: 78(w) x 74(d) x 81(h)cm. (Standard size is approx 60(w) x 59(d)x 80(h))
