Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson Rare Adzed Oak Longcase Clock, 1973

A rare to market Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson longcase / grandfather clock presented in superb condition, commissioned and supplied in 1973. These grandfather clocks were only ever made to special order at Robert Thompson’s and it’s rarer still to find an early one with a sought after  adzed all over case, production of which appears to have ceased in the early 70s in favour of the less costly to make plain cased version. It’s our understanding that all the grandfather clock cases were made by either Malcolm Pipes (retired Foxman) or Len Haw (retired Mouseman).

This example retains its original 8 day, twin weight driven West German Schmeckenbecher movement with a brass clock face  which we’ve had professionally stripped, cleaned, re-bushed where necessary, oiled, re-assembled and time regulated prior to re-fitting. The brass weights and pendulum have also been cleaned and re-polished, all the work completed by Thirsk Horologist Chris Tyas who’s worked on all of the Mouseman and other craftsmen’s clock mechanisms over many decades. Sadly for us, and everyone else local to the area, he’s retiring and has now stopped taking on any new work. All the very best Chris for a long and happy retirement. The clock gives a single strike on the half hour and full strikes on the hour.

The case has also been cleaned and re-waxed in our own workshop. A trademark mouse is carved in high relief to the middle front of the base section.

It’s complete with original invoice, correspondence, instruction leaflet and a handful of spares. It has come to market from the original Teesside owners estate.
