Robert Thompson ‘Mouseman’ Burr Oak Corner Standing Cupboard, 1930s

An excellent and rare example of a 1930s, burr oak corner standing cupboard by Robert Thompson, the ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn, North Yorkshire.

Fully adzed to the top and all facing surfaces, the adzed panels individually inset with distinctive heavily burred oak. There’s also distinctive penny moulding across the top curved framework, the top nail pinned and adzed in line with early craftsmanship. The rear is also panelled. Three fixed wooden shelves internally for storage and traditional wrought iron fittings with the early square headed screws. Lovely early mouse signature in relief to one side edge.

The piece has been sympathetically cleaned and wax polished in our workshop, most notably to remove numerous black ring stains on the top. There was also slight warpage and wood cracking just to the rear apex tip of the top which we’ve filled with a restorers wax stick to blend it in. The piece is darker fumed from new and presents with lovely rich aged colour tones….. classic early ‘Mouseman’.
