Robert Thompson ‘Mouseman’ Early Oak Fruitbowl, 1930s

An excellent example of the extremely popular 1930s made 9 ½″ diameter solid oak fruitbowl by Robert Thompson, the ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn. Adzed and tooled all over  with a distinctive early beautifully shaped signature mouse carved to the exterior side of the bowl. From about 1960 the bowls have been larger but shallower, and the mice have been carved to the centre of the bowl.

Excellent overall condition and patina with medium fumed and aged colour, just the usual expected minor fruit acid marking in the bowl from usage and some minor rubbing / polishing wear to the ears of the mouse carving, adding to the character and patina of these sought after bowls.  The bowl is particularly thick rimmed, adding overall weight and making it less likely that natural grain splitting will occur over time.

Size: 24.5(dia) x 6.5(h)cm
