Robert Thompson ‘Mouseman’ Pair of Bespoke Oak Monks Chairs, 2011

An intriguing and most unusual bespoke pair of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson oak monks chairs. They are modern made but their specific bespoke design features hark back to the early 1930s when it was usual to see the incorporation of a drop-in interwoven lattice leather strapped seat, grid iron side and back splats and the mouse carved high up on the front leg.

They present in superb condition, medium fumed and clear waxed. We’ve cleaned and conditioned the aniline leather with a high quality saddle soap and it is now acquiring a lovely colour and patina.

Provenance: With the selling auctioneer only able to disclose limited information due to confidentiality, with our own research and existing knowledge, we’ve ascertained that they were bespoke made and gifted by Robert Thomson’s to a senior Rothschild Bank executive who was a Mouseman enthusiast and was heavily involved in the prestigious 2011 commission R. Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd undertook to fit out the Rothschild Archive’s Library and Reading Room at their new London HQ. The bookcases alone used 20 oaks, took 5,500 hours to produce and 1000 hours to install. The oaks were sourced from the 3000 acre Hirsel Estate in Berwickshire, the ancestral home of the Earls of Home.
