An excellent and rare  example of an adzed oak corner shelf made by ex mouseman craftsman Fred ‘Oakleafman’ Suffield. The top is adzed and constructed from a substantial single block of 1 3/4″ thick solid oak, the leading edge canted and featuring very fine and distinctive arts and crafts carved detailing. The top is supported by a 1 1/4″ thick dovetail jointed oak bracket with screw holes drilled at regular intervals and Fred’s signature oakleaf carved into the oak prominently. Cut down shelf support buttons are used to seal off the screw holes on the bracket.

Cleaned  of accumulated paint splashing and wax polished it has a wonderful deep  aged honey colour and patina.

Fred Suffield was a Robert Thompson’s craftsman in the 40s/50s, he later worked for Sid Pollard and on his own. His solo work is quite rare to the market and bears an Oakleaf signature. He died at a relatively young age in the 1970s. His Oakleaf signature was later revived and adopted by David Langstaff when he set up  his own business in 1986, although there are subtle differences in their design.
