Circa late 40s / 50s

A rare and exquisitely carved oak dish of stylized leaf form from ex mouseman craftsman Martin Dutton. A wonderfully tactile piece to handle, the oak is beatifully contoured and tooled in traditional mouseman style to all visible surfaces with his distinctive Lizard carved prominently within the dish. Very dry and grubby on acquisition a gentle clean and re-wax in our workshop has really brought out the rich natural colour of the fumed oak. No evidence of any losses or repairs, just a couple of natural hairline shrinkage splits to edges (shown in the image gallery)  which are quite usual on a piece like this crafted from oak.

Martin Dutton (1921-2009) of Huby, Nr York was a talented craftsman who trained and worked at Thompson’s prior to and through the war years. His solo work from the late 40s onwards bears  his distinctive Lizard carving. Martin, who was deaf and dumb, later became the senior woodwork teacher at the  Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster, the lizard carving continued by his associate craftsman Derek Slater.
